Sofi Gunnstedt
About
Sofi Gunnstedt works with ceramics, both in her own artistic practice and as an art educator. Working from her studio in Årsta, she focuses mainly on hand-building and sculpture, centering the materiality and possibilities of clay.
“Clay is my language, my way of translating - my Google Translate. And just like with Google Translate, the original meaning doesn't always come through clearly.
For me, art is a way to communicate - sometimes with others, sometimes with myself. It can mean creating a place, a mood, a feeling, or trying to understand what's happening around me. I like that ceramics can hold both the concrete and the hard-to-grasp: something you can hold in your hand, yet something that stirs what can't quite be explained.
I keep returning to vases and their forms - as bodies, places, stories, sometimes as a reflection of myself. There's something interesting in what isn't perfect. In the crack, the crookedness, the unexpected, there's a way forward.”
